The enactment of Law 11.645 of March 2008 determined the mandatory teaching of Afro-Brazilian and indigenous history and culture in school curricula. The indigenous theme, despite the legislation, is only evident in some historical periods, such as the Portuguese colonization, being omitted in others. This makes understanding about the participation of native peoples in the History of Brazil difficult. The obligation of this theme offers new perspectives on the History of Brazil, as it highlights their contributions as historical subjects in different aspects (social, political, etc.), not just in the past. In this sense, the objective of this text is to promote discussions about the teaching of indigenous themes in Basic Education, not only limited to the indigenous stereotype of the colonial period, but as protagonists in historical processes. Methodologically, we present a bibliographic research based on the theoretical assumptions of Silva, E.; Silva, M. (2018), Ferreira (2016), Silva (2016) among others who discuss indigenous issues and basic education.
