This work presents a reflection on actions and experiences promoted by the Incubadora de Empreendimentos Populares e Solidários - ITEPS as a center for research, extension, and culture, through activities with indigenous communities. The aim was to highlight the benefits and challenges of participatory research methods when applied in traditional communities, specifically within the Truká indigenous community located in Cabrobó, Pernambuco. We understand that the discussion of these benefits and challenges of participatory methods when applied to indigenous communities is the initial step toward the reformulation of colonial thinking, which places traditional communities in a bubble of stereotypes and unfounded deductions about local reality. Engagement with indigenous communities occurs in several stages, involving the mutual exchange of academic and traditional knowledge among those involved in the initiative.
