We search to reflect on the meanings of higher education for indigenous peoples in Pernambuco, considering that the search for this academic training is part of a phenomenon that occurs in several countries around the world, where there are peoples who were forcibly subjected to contact relations with other peoples from cultures different from their own, generally from other continents. Throughout history, indigenous peoples have conquered rights that demand reconfiguration of the relationships between indigenous societies and national societies, among which, the necessity from autonomy to self-management of the indigenous world. Thus, configuring the idea of “Education as practice of freedom”. Whether individual and/or collective freedom: the first, when this formation aims at the individual's social mobility; the second, when this formation promotes autonomy and self-management of territories through the work of qualified indigenous professionals.
